HKT Limited brings home two accolades at Asian Telecom Awards
The company is positioned to roll out new products and services to reach the public in the future.
Telecom company HKT Limited has won two major awards at the recently held Asian Telecom Awards for its creation of a city-wide 2500M and Wi-Fi 6E super-high bandwidth home network and a city-wide 10Gbps optical fibre access network.
One of its award-winning entries was the time that NETVIGATOR, an Internet Service Provider wholly owned by HKT, became one of the first broadband telecom carriers in Asia to launch a 2500M Fibre-to-the-Home broadband service, something that tech-savvy internet users had been waiting for.
The service rode on a state-of-the-art HKT XGS-PON 10Gbps symmetrical optical fibre access network and utilised the latest customised Optical Network Terminal to deliver a maximum of 2.5Gbps downstream and upstream bandwidth together with the IPTV service on a single broadband line.
Whilst this service had been exceptional, it was not without challenges. One of the significant challenges was a majority of Hong Kong citizens were suffering from in-home Wi-Fi connectivity problems due to the concrete structure of normal Hong Kong apartments. This hindered the internet experience of their broadband service with the company. This led HKT to set up a Smart Living team of Wi-Fi and networking professionals to help customers make the best use of the 2.5Gbps bandwidth, whether they were living in tiny apartments or multi-storey villas.
HKT extended its 2500M high-speed broadband service optical fibre network coverage to remote villages and outlying islands to uplift the service coverage even further.
The introduction of the innovative 2500M Fibre-to-the-Home broadband service in Hong Kong opened a new era of internet connectivity for the city and set the city on the path to Web 3.0. Hong Kong now offers some of the highest levels of home internet penetration and the fastest speeds in the world.
As the service gains popularity, HKT will continue to expand the underlying 10G optical fibre network so the company can grow its business and continue to offer even more advanced telecom services in the future.
With this product, HKT won the Broadband Telecom Company of the Year - Hong Kong award in the awards programme.
Meanwhile, a 10Gbps fibre optic network in Hong Kong was deployed by HKT back in 2015. It has now evolved into a fully symmetrical fibre optic network providing advanced high-speed broadband services for over 98% of Hong Kong households, together with 5G mobile broadband technology.
The success of this deployment led to the recognition of HKT by the Hong Kong Government to participate in the OFCA Subsidy Scheme to expand fibre coverage to remote villages in Hong Kong. In this scheme, over 97 remote villages were selected for fibre optic coverage.
As of January 2023, HKT had installed over two million kilometres of fibre optic cable cores in Hong Kong, which helped establish the region as one of the world’s most well-connected cities with the greatest level of internet penetration and some of the highest internet speeds anywhere.
HKT clinched the Infrastructure Initiative of the Year - Hong Kong award for this solution.
The company’s 10Gbps symmetrical optical fibre network and 2500M Fibre-to-the-Home broadband service cemented the company’s leading position in technological advancement and benefitted Hong Kong by making more advanced internet applications easily available to almost every citizen in the city.
