Telekom Malaysia stretches their lead in the country’s wholesale telco industry

The company’s domestic and international wholesale business arm, TM Global, wins two awards at the 2023 Asian Telecom Awards.

Malaysia’s leading converged telecommunications company, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (“TM”), through its domestic and international wholesale business arm, TM Global, has won both the Telecom Company of the Year - Malaysia Award and the Wholesale Company Initiative of the Year - Malaysia Award at this year’s Asian Telecom Awards.

This awards programme recognises the feats and successes of telecom companies across Asia in bridging gaps within a challenging market, and TM has distinguished themselves from their competition through an expansive and customised range of wholesale data, connectivity and platform solutions.

Through their efforts in expanding the reach of value-driven connectivity and unique solutions throughout Malaysia, TM Global has enabled the population to embrace a more digital lifestyle and high-quality experiences, whilst also empowering greater digital inclusion.

Telecom Company of the Year - Malaysia

Telekom Malaysia through TM Global expanded its reach to over 136 countries through their broad and customisable range of wholesale data, connectivity and platform solutions. This expansion has amounted to a steady third-quarter 2022 performance where revenue increased by 26.0% from RM610.9m to RM769.9m.

Apart from that, TM has also accelerated the country’s development of a 5G ecosystem and ramped up the country’s infrastructure sharing with their extensive domestic fibre cable network of over 650,000km and over 3 million high-speed broadband access ports across Malaysia. To further enhance High-Speed Broadband Access (HSBA), over 670,000 ports were delivered to five local broadband providers to cater to both urban and rural communities.

TM also operates six data centres in Malaysia, three of which are Tier III certified and directly connected to the international gateway that hosts major hyperscalers and OTT players from the United States and Asia. Additionally, TM provides options for bundling with other services to create total end-to-end solutions that combine co-location, capacity, connectivity and IP that enable TM Global’s customers to enjoy seamless, secure and uninterrupted connectivity.

Given Malaysia’s favourable location, TM has capitalised on this opportunity with their access to 30 submarine cable networks of more than 320,000 kilometres that help link Malaysia and the surrounding region with the rest of the world. Their latest addition to the network is SEA-ME-WE-6 and a new key cable landing station in the Klang Valley, which is close to most hyperscalers’ data centres.

This facilitates TM’s continuous support for network operators, video streaming providers, and content providers in distributing content throughout the ASEAN region.

Wholesale Company Initiative of the Year - Malaysia

TM via TM Global started offering customised options for comprehensive data, connectivity, and platform solutions to resolve issues in network infrastructure and coverage such as quality deterioration and longer lead time.

Using their enhanced mobile backhaul solutions, TM successfully accelerated 4G and 5G rollout for their mobile network operator (MNO) customers with over 5400 4G and 5G fibre backhaul sites nationwide. This helped boost network coverage and digital adoption across the country.

To support this initiative, TM Global has also established Edge Facilities which are designed to cater to the Edge Compute Platform (ECP) and TM's Internet Exchange (TMiX) requirements. The sites act as regional 5G Points of Interconnect (POI) for MNOs, whilst TMiX optimises internet connectivity for peak performance, resilience and efficient exchange of local and regional traffic.

TM Edge has been heavily promoted by the company as a key digital infrastructure and solution. The offering includes content delivery service with over 90 cache nodes worldwide, last-mile delivery, edge computing, and gaming services that assist network operators, video streaming providers, and content providers in their media distribution.
