Hong Kong’s fixed wireless access market expands as 5G coverage strengthens
The firm said growth will be driven by the city’s extensive 5G coverage and rising demand for high-speed connectivity
Hong Kong’s fixed wireless access market is set for steady expansion, with service revenue forecast by GlobalData to grow at a 9.6% compound annual rate from 2025 to 2030.
The firm said growth will be driven by the city’s extensive 5G coverage and rising demand for high-speed connectivity in locations where extending fibre remains difficult, positioning FWA as a practical alternative for both households and businesses.
Operators are already sharpening their offers. HKBN is marketing a 5G Home Broadband plan at $118 a month on a 24-month contract, with unlimited data subject to a 300-gigabyte fair-use level, a 28-dollar administration fee waiver, a seven-day trial, and HomeShield basic cybersecurity features included.
3 Hong Kong and HKT are also scaling their 5G-based home broadband propositions, with HKT deploying millimetre-wave FWA to reach rural districts and outlying islands.
Policy initiatives under Hong Kong’s Smart City Blueprint 2.0 are expected to support further use cases across the digital economy, e-government and e-health, which in turn strengthen the business case for 5G FWA.
For operators, GlobalData notes that FWA provides a way to widen home and SME broadband coverage with lower capital expenditure than fibre, lift average revenue per user through bundled digital-home services, accelerate coverage in underserved areas and diversify revenue streams.
