Globe names Consing chairman after Zobel exit

Leadership passes after 30 years at the helm.

Globe Telecom has named Cezar P. Consing as chairman after Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala stepped down from the role and from the board.

The Philippine-listed telecom company said Consing was elected chairman on 21 April at the board’s organisational meeting held after its annual stockholders’ meeting.

Zobel de Ayala had served as chairman since December 1996 and as director since March 1989.

Globe said Zobel de Ayala helped steer the company’s transformation from a cable business into a digital telco, citing the Globe-Mackay merger, its strategic partnership with Singtel, and acquisitions including IslaCom, Bayantel, and Vega Telecom.

It also credited his tenure with backing digital ventures such as GCash, Kickstart Ventures, 917Ventures, Asticom, Brave Group, and ST Telemedia Global Data Centres.

The company added that Zobel de Ayala would continue to support Globe as chairman of Asiacom Philippines, the joint venture of Ayala Corporation and Singtel, Globe’s major shareholders.

In its disclosure, Globe also highlighted his role in advancing sustainability efforts, including becoming the first publicly listed Philippine company to have its net-zero roadmap validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.

Consing is the chief executive of Ayala Corporation and previously led Bank of the Philippine Islands from 2013 to 2021. Globe said he had also held senior investment banking roles at J.P. Morgan in Asia Pacific and had served at The Rohatyn Group.
