China to end 2023 with 5G penetration of 90%
5G network to dominate mobile technology in the country this 2023
The penetration rate of 5G technology in China is expected to reach 90% as of the end of 2023 with the deployment of 360,000 5G base stations during the year, local carrier China Mobile said.
The mobile service provider told local news outlets that it had already deployed a total of 1.7 million 5G base stations across the country with a penetration rate of more than 85%.
A previous report from GSMA forecasted that China will reach 1 billion 5G subscribers by 2025, and is expected to increase to 1.6 billion by 2030.
In November 2023, China’s three major telecom operators announced their subscriber totals for the month including a combined net increase of approximately 26 million 5G package subscribers — boosting the number to nearly 1.348 billion. As of the end of November, 5G package subscribers accounted for 78.6% and 77.3% of China Mobile’s and China Telecom’s total mobile subscriber bases, respectively.
Meanwhile, China Broadnet, which officially launched 5G services in June 2022, disclosed a total of 20 million 5G subscribers as of the end of October 2023, according to previous reports.
As most users have migrated to 5G, the report added that the network will overtake 4G in 2024 to become the dominant mobile technology in China.
