EdgePoint Towers Sdn Bhd honoured at Asian Telecom Awards 2025
The Malaysia-based company earned recognition for its exemplary approach to ensuring connectivity in the Menora Tunnel.
EdgePoint Towers Sdn Bhd received the Technology Innovation of the Year - Malaysia at the Asian Telecom Awards 2025, proving the efficiency of its innovative solutions in enhancing connectivity and safety at the Menora Tunnel.
The Menora Tunnel—spanning approximately 800 metres through the Kledang Mountain Range and connecting northern and central Peninsular Malaysia—is an essential part of Malaysia’s North-South Expressway (PLUS Highway).
However, the tunnel has long been known as a high-risk area for accidents. This is due to its steep 6% gradient, which is the steepest on the highway. Making it more high-risk is its narrow and dimly lit entrance that reduces visibility and challenges drivers, especially during rainy conditions.
Taking on the challenge of improving traveller safety and enhancing mobile connectivity within the tunnel, EdgePoint has deployed state-of-the-art technologies designed to provide reliable communication for drivers, especially in emergencies. This addresses the critical need for continuous mobile signal coverage, ensuring that travellers can make phone calls or access emergency services whilst going through the tunnel.
EdgePoint's solution includes two technologies, namely the 4G High Power Active Solution and a Location Management System (LMS).
The 4G High Power Active Solution distributes mobile signals over long distances that provide consistent and high-quality coverage throughout the tunnel. This system is capable of supporting high data rates and low latency, enabling seamless voice calls, video streaming, and data-heavy applications even in challenging conditions.
The LMS, which complements the 4G High Power Active Solution, meanwhile enhances network management by offering real-time location-based monitoring of the tunnel's mobile infrastructure. With this, engineers can track signal strength fluctuations and spikes in user demand, making it possible to optimise network performance on the fly and ensure uninterrupted service. Additionally, the LMS facilitates remote diagnostics and management which minimises downtime and maximises operational efficiency.
Furthermore, EdgePoint’s infrastructure is future-proof, designed to accommodate additional mobile network operators (MNOs) and new frequency bands. The scalable system is also prepared for the upcoming 5G technology.
Despite the challenges posed by the tunnel’s geographical conditions and heavy traffic, EdgePoint’s team worked with precision and coordination to ensure the project was completed smoothly. Engineers and project managers carefully planned the installation to minimise traffic disruptions and ensure the safety of both workers and travellers, demonstrating EdgePoint’s commitment to seamless execution in complex environments.
The successful implementation of EdgePoint’s solutions marks a significant milestone in making the Menora Tunnel a safer, more connected transportation route.
With its upgraded infrastructure and cutting-edge connectivity solutions, the Menora Tunnel sets a new standard for safety and digital innovation within Malaysia’s transportation network.
