Telkomsel wins at Asian Telecom Awards 2025
The company was given recognition for pioneering Indonesia’s train safety digitalisation with AI-powered IoT video solutions.
Telkomsel emerged as the recipient of the IoT Initiative of the Year - Indonesia at this year’s Asian Telecom Awards for enhancing the safety and efficiency of Indonesia’s freight train operations with its AI-powered solution, FleetSense.
With over 8,260 kilometres of railway tracks, Indonesia’s railway network is one of the largest in Southeast Asia. However, the industry faces significant safety challenges—with over 2,000 incidents each year, many caused by human errors such as fatigue and distracted driving.
To tackle these issues, Telkomsel’s FleetSense introduces an innovative AI-powered system that uses smart cameras, IoT sensors, and cloud-based analytics to monitor and improve driver behaviour.
FleetSense has an intelligent monitoring feature which includes AI-powered cameras that detect signs of driver fatigue, such as slow eye movements or abnormal head positions. The system also tracks distractions, including mobile phone use or smoking, to prevent risky behaviour. The system also analyses video data to provide insights into operational patterns and potential risks
Moreover, FleetSense automatically sends alerts to the Command Centre if fatigue or unsafe behaviour is detected, which prompts them for immediate preventive action. The data collected from the field is also uploaded to the cloud for ongoing analysis.
FleetSense has proven itself beneficial to the railway industry through the improved safety it provides, uninterrupted communication and monitoring across the railway fleet, and its ability as a cost-effective solution.
In Q3 2024, Telkomsel partnered with a state-owned enterprise (SOE) to implement FleetSense on over 200 locomotives in South Sumatra, Indonesia’s largest coal transport route. This 409-kilometre route moves 40 million tonnes of coal annually, worth $5b, highlighting the critical need for enhanced safety and efficiency.
After the first month of implementation, FleetSense has already delivered impressive results, including over 100,000 alerts generated, actionable insights that have led to the development of new safety protocols, and digitised safety checks that help ensure the smooth flow of coal freight.
Looking ahead, Telkomsel plans to enhance FleetSense by 2025 with features like AI-powered facial recognition and rapid health checks for drivers. These additions will allow for identity verification and health assessments before train departures.
Telkomsel’s FleetSense supports the country’s vision for a smarter and more efficient transportation network, also representing a major step in modernising the railway industry.
