AI- and robotics-driven smart manufacturing powered by Yes 5G
In May 2024, YTL Communications unveiled Malaysia’s first advanced manufacturing facility powered by AI and robotics. Located at Clarion Malaysia and enabled by the Yes 5G Private Network, this state-of-the-art facility represents a major milestone in the nation’s industrial transformation.
Partnering with a leader in advanced manufacturing, YTL Communications introduced a cutting-edge 5G solution leveraging Private 5G SA (Standalone) technology. This breakthrough sets a new benchmark for manufacturing and automation, paving the way for similar innovations across Malaysia and the ASEAN region.
Yes Private 5G directly addressed key operational challenges that Clarion Malaysia previously faced, including inefficiencies in material handling, inventory tracking, material movement, and connectivity infrastructure using legacy Ethernet cables and WiFi networks that struggled to support the mobility and low latency requirements of AI and robotics. However, with Yes Private 5G’s ultra-reliable, high-speed connectivity and robust security, operations have been optimised, significantly enhancing efficiency and responsiveness to market demands.
The Yes Private 5G SA (Standalone) network, built on ORAN (Open RAN) standard using Intel servers, has driven transformative improvements across various aspects of the manufacturing process. The implementation of automated robotics has streamlined material movement, whilst smart racks have enhanced inventory tracking and management. Intelligent systems now enable real-time inventory updates, ensuring smooth and accurate operations. Additionally, predictive maintenance and advanced analytics have minimised downtime and increased overall productivity.
The results of this transformation have been significant. Equipment effectiveness has improved by 70 percent, whilst material handling efficiency has increased by 80 percent. Unplanned downtime has been reduced by 90 percent, and manual errors have been completely eliminated. Material return times are now 13 times faster, and inventory picking is 80 percent more efficient. The investment in this technology achieved a positive return on investment within just seven months.
This success underscores the immense potential of 5G in manufacturing and highlights its applicability across industries such as healthcare, logistics, and transportation. This solution has been successfully deployed at Tanjong Jara Resort and Pangkor Laut Resort, addressing long-standing connectivity challenges in complex environments. At the beachfront Tanjong Jara Resort, the sandy environment has made its legacy fibre network hard to maintain, creating frequent disruptions. Yes 5G enhanced connectivity by deploying Yes Managed Wi-Fi powered entirely by 5G Routers, ensuring seamless coverage across the resort’s 76-acre property. The installation was completed in just two weeks, and this new network has achieved 99.9% service availability.
Pangkor Laut Resort, an island resort spanning 300 acres with 140 villas, implemented Yes Managed Wi-Fi to eliminate connectivity complaints and enhance guest experiences. The cloud-based architecture of the solution enables businesses to scale efficiently whilst simplifying network management. With real-time monitoring and control, resort staff can quickly resolve network issues and allocate bandwidth as needed. Designed for faster, cost-effective deployment compared to traditional networks, the system is particularly well-suited for challenging environments such as remote islands and beachfront properties.
