Fiber@Home – a name for building Digital Bangladesh and eliminating the digital divide of the country

The company  significantly expanded the country's optical fibre infrastructure to unify various telecommunications services, bridging the digital divide and enhancing socio-economic development.

Fiber@Home Limited (Fiber@Home) is the first company to introduce the Nationwide Telecommunication Transmission Network (NTTN) concept in Bangladesh. The innovative initiative helped the company to build a common network for the Government, Mobile Network Operators, ISPs, Cable TV operators, Gateway operators and other Access Network Service (ANS) operators in the country. The NTTN concept helped foster interoperability amongst different operators and increased collective capacity exponentially. The country is now getting 1000 times more transmission bandwidth compared to what was available at the same price 15 years back. It came into reality mainly because of the common infrastructure and the interoperable technology. The initiative has witnessed a huge multiplier effect in the socio-economic developments and was one of the key underlies for making Digital Bangladesh a reality today.

Fiber@Home has been honoured with the prestigious Asia Telecom Award 2024 in the category of Infrastructure Initiative of the Year - Bangladesh. This remarkable achievement is a testament to your company's commitment to excellence and innovation in the telecommunications industry. Fiber@Home has consistently demonstrated outstanding performance and dedication, making it a deserving recipient of such a distinguished accolade. The Asia Telecom Award recognises and celebrates organisations that have significantly contributed towards the advancement of telecommunications in the region, and Fiber@Home’s success is truly commendable. Mr. Azad Chowdhury, Chief Executive Officer and Mr. Mozahidul Islam, Chief Business Development Officer were present at the occasion to accept the coveted award on behalf of the company.

Prior to 2009, there was a limited optical fibre network in Bangladesh covering very few Districts. In these 15 years of Fiber@Home’s journey, the company built one million core-km cable infrastructure and covered 64 Districts, 495 Upazillas and over 3923 Unions (identified as the lowest level of city government). The company is continuously expanding its network and covering the most rural and remote parts of the country to eliminate the digital divide. It has also established a state-of-the-art telecommunication transmission network with multiple redundant paths ensuring the highest quality of services.

Mr. Moynul Haque Siddiqui, the Chairman of Fiber@Home, designed the innovative proposal and secured the nod from the regulatory authority to achieve a significant milestone towards digital inclusion in Bangladesh Thereafter, two more private companies were awarded the NTTN license to operate as NTTNs.

Fiber@Home not only laid the fibre optic cable all over the country to create a common infrastructure and save costs for all stakeholders but also created a common platform for multiprotocol consolidation. Currently, Fiber@Home is working with the government to bring the 87,000+ villages under Broadband connectivity.

Fiber@Home connected all the Government offices in the country back in 2014 which validated the proof-of-concept for the Government’s Info-Sarkar projects (focused on nationwide connectivity). The company also undertook initiatives for Smart Government, e.g., setting up the CCTV surveillance network for the prime areas of the capital city of Dhaka to aid the Police; and also worked with the Law & Order Coordination Council (led by the Dhaka North City Corporation) to reduce crime significantly in the city areas.

The Founder and Chairman of Fiber@Home was also awarded for his silent march towards innovation in social development and his enormous contribution to the industry.  He has also been separately appreciated by various government organisations for his commendable contribution to the nation in the areas of ICT advancement.

Last but not least, the company has revolutionised service levels in Bangladesh’s infrastructure industry, which was most prominently displayed by the brave field teams during the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic which ensured the economy, schools and hospitals had access to the help and information they needed. We wish Fiber@Home continued success in its journey ahead.
