Vianet Communication uplifts Nepali businesses through XGS fibre technology

It has launched XGS fibre technology to close the gaps in the market in providing higher-bandwidth connection.

As a leading Internet and TV provider in Nepal, Vianet Communication has always strived to bring the best and newest technology to the market.

When the Internet industry in Nepal was heavily dominated by Asymmetric digital subscriber line and Ethernet network distribution technology back in 2011, the company realised the need for high-speed, reliable, consistent Internet connection with low downtime.

This started the fruition of more revolutionary technologies, such as introducing Nepal’s first Fiber-To-The-Home service in 2011 and then Internet Protocol Television service in 2016. Continuing on their history of adoption of new technology, Vianet recently introduced the country’s first XGS fibre technology-enabled multi-gigabit Internet service in 2023.

The XGS fibre technology is an updated standard for passive optical network (PON) fibre-based transmission technology, which supports high-speed 10 gigabits per second (Gbps) symmetrical data transfers. This means that XGS-PON technology is capable of delivering last-mile broadband network access at speeds of up to 10 Gbps downstream and 10 Gbps upstream.

Since its launch in March of previous year, the fibre internet service has been well-received by customers and has been able to solve various market gaps. Amongst this is the ability for XGS to allow large companies with a high number of workforces in the same building to receive higher bandwidth per employee.

Internet being an integral part of any business communication with video calling being the new standard, XGS undoubtedly enables companies to experience better productivity and employee satisfaction.

At the same time, XGS also allows support for a large number of concurrent video calls. Nepal has a large number of IT companies that work for US-based IT companies and have to have a large number of its members on conference calls with clients in the US. Such companies rely on Vianet XGS to be able to support such a large number of video calls.

Having assessed the market and seeing the need for connectivity with a higher bandwidth and lower latency, Vianet’s efforts in developing the XGS fibre technology has been acknowledged by the Asian Telecom Awards, as the company clinched the Broadband Telecom Company of the Year - Nepal and the Technology Innovation of the Year - Nepal category wins.

“Vianet again has established itself as an innovative and future thinking company. We plan to further invest in increasing [the] network reach of our XGS technology and are already in works on a new technology project that will bring another revolution in Nepal’s Internet industry soon,” the company said.

The prestigious awards programme honours businesses and initiatives that have not only driven progress in the telecom industry, but have also ignited transformative shifts that have reshaped the digital landscape.
