New mobile sub-brand in the works in Vietnam
Upcoming telco service aimed at young users.
A new mobile telecom sub-brand is being developed in Vietnam for a 2026 launch.
The pending telco service is a collaboration between Hanoi-based Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) and Tokyo-headquartered KDDI Corporation. The business cooperation is aimed at rolling out a mobile offering designed for Vietnam's digital-native users and young demographic.
"VNPT and KDDI believe that demand for online-centred telecommunications services will continue to grow in the Vietnamese market," the firms said in a release.
"By combining VNPT's robust domestic telecommunications infrastructure and customer reach with KDDI's know-how cultivated through the operation of 'povo' in Japan, the two companies aim to create new value and deliver innovative mobile services to customers in Vietnam."
The announcement was referring to KDDI's online-only mobile brand povo, which was launched in Japan in 2021 through a KDDI partnership with Singaporean digital telco Circles.
In Vietnam, VNPT and KDDI's plan comes as demand for fully online experiences grows amongst the country's younger generations.
No specific timeline was announced for this year's planned rollout, but the upcoming service is expected to feature flexible pricing and a simplified user experience.
