Indian institutes partner with DoT to develop 6G ‘cell-free’ access points

The partnership will boost India’s 6G technology

Two Indian technology institutes have partnered with the country’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to work on developing “cell-free” access points as a potential component of future 6G systems.

The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) and Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi) signed the agreement with the Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), DoT’s telecom research and development (R&D) arm.

The joint project was part of the DoT’s Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) which was established to support domestic companies, startups, academia, and R&D institutions in the design, development, and commercialisation of telecommunication products and solutions.

Under the agreement, the institutions will focus on creating access points for future 6G radio access networks, contributing to 6G standardisation, driving commercialisation, generating intellectual property rights, and developing a skilled workforce to support the emerging 6G landscape.

C-DOT CEO Rajkumar Upadhyay underscored the key role of indigenously designed and developed technologies in meeting the specific requirements of communication for India.

Upadhyay added that this initiative will help the country generate intellectual property rights in the 6G domain and emerging technologies in the area of 6G, which has not yet been standardised.

India’s Bharat 6G Alliance recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) and 6G Flagship-Oulu University to boost research activities in the 6G field.

The Bharat 6G Alliance is an initiative of the Indian industry, academia, national research institutions and standards organisations to focus on designing, developing and deploying technology for future 6G systems.
