Malaysia to build largest circuit design park in Southeast Asia
Prime Minister aims to boost Malaysia's digital tech presence with this ambitious project.
The Malaysian government has been looking at implementing ambitious investment plans aimed at raising the country’s presence in digital technology over the next few years.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government is proposing to build the largest integrated circuit design park in Southeast Asia as part of its intent to transition beyond backend chip assembly and testing.
The park, supported by Malaysia's central Selangor state, will be strategically located on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, encompassing the capital Kuala Lumpur. It is envisioned to accommodate world-class anchor tenants and foster collaborations with global industry giants like Arm Holdings, although operational specifics and investment figures are yet to be fully detailed.
The park will be backed by Malaysia’s central Selangor state, a state on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, encircling the capital Kuala Lumpur. It will house world-class anchor tenants and collaborate with global giants such as chip maker Arm Holdings. However, the prime minister said details of operational specifics and investment figures are yet to be identified.
Malaysia is already a major player in the semiconductor industry which accounts for about 13% of global testing and packaging, and according to reports, it now aims to turn into a regional digital hub to be among the top 20 countries in the global start-up ecosystem index by 2030.
