Vietnam to mete out huge fines against telcos in number portability issue
Complaints persist despite feature's existence for nearly seven years.
Telecom operators in Vietnam who are restricting customers from enjoying the mobile number portability (MNP) feature are to be hugely penalised.
According to a VietNamNet Global report, the Vietnamese government will crack down on such telcos amidst persistent complaints of unjustified rejections and number porting delays.
It was noted that penalties of as much as US$8,400 will be meted out.
Violations against MNP regulations include declining a porting request outside of the prescribed cases of rejection; making customers pay additional charges on top of the porting fee; and failing to properly follow MNP procedures.
It was reported that, for the first seven months of 2025, the government had to enforce porting in nearly 200 cases which were found to be valid requests but were initially turned down by the different mobile operators in the country.
MNP has been in place in Vietnam since November 2018.
