Australia unveils National AI Plan

Comprehensive roadmap guided by three key goals.

Australia has released its comprehensive National AI (artificial intelligence) Plan, detailing how the country intends to maximise AI's full potential.

In the 37-page roadmap, the Australian government outlines its approach to AI, guided by these three goals: capturing the opportunities; spreading the benefits; and keeping Australians safe.

"AI is already shaping our economy and society, presenting both opportunities and challenges," reads part of the National AI Plan seen by Asian Telecom.

"Realising the full benefits of AI will not happen by chance – it requires deliberate, coordinated action to seize the potential of AI whilst managing its risks.

"This plan sets out the steps the Australian government will take to support Australia to build an AI-enabled economy that is more competitive, productive and resilient."

It cites "significant private sector capital ready to invest in AI technologies" and the government's role in ensuring a fit-for-purpose environment. Notably, the "starting point" National AI Plan is expected to be revised as needed.

"As the technology continues to evolve, we will continue to refine and strengthen this plan to seize new opportunities and act decisively to keep Australians safe," said Minister for Industry and Innovation and Minister for Science Tim Ayres.

Meanwhile Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy Dr Andrew Charlton added: "The government is setting out an agenda that will attract positive investment, support Australian businesses to adopt and create new AI tools, and address the real risks faced by everyday Australians."

As part of the plan, Australia is establishing the AI Safety Institute early next year.
