Bangladesh marks first rollout of 700 MHz spectrum

Nationwide deployment carried out by telecom operator Grameenphone.

The inaugural deployment of low-band 700 MHz spectrum in Bangladesh is underway.

Carried out by telco service provider Grameenphone, the nationwide rollout is seen as an important milestone in advancing digital connectivity in the South Asian state.

"The deployment of the 700 MHz spectrum represents a significant step forward in strengthening Bangladesh's telecommunications ecosystem and expanding equitable access to digital services," said Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Chairman Md Emdad Ul Bari.

"As a low-band spectrum, it will play a critical role in improving coverage quality, particularly in indoor environments and underserved areas across the country. For customers, this means more reliable connectivity, better voice and data performance, and improved access to essential digital services – regardless of location."

Widely used globally to enhance service quality and reach, the 700 MHz spectrum enables faster and more cost-effective network expansion as a result of its wider coverage per base station site.

Grameenphone is the first telecom operator in Bangladesh to deploy the technology, having been allocated 10 MHz spectrum in the 700 MHz band for a 13-year period.

"The deployment of the 700 MHz spectrum marks another important step towards strengthening the country's digital infrastructure," commented Advisor to the Prime Minister for Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Rehan Asif Asad.

"Expanding high-quality connectivity across urban and rural areas alike will help accelerate digital inclusion, support economic growth, and enhance access to essential services for people across Bangladesh."

According to Grameenphone CEO Yasir Azman, the 700 MHz spectrum will not only boost 4G performance but also allow the preparation for other technologies such as 5G as part of developing a future-ready telco ecosystem in Bangladesh.
